BIMSafe NZ Update July/August 2023

Welcome to the latest update from BIMSafe NZ.

This issue brings exciting news about a new direction for the BIMSafe NZ project, a report on the importance of BIM for procurement, and new videos in our series. Plus we talk to Jo Duggan, CEO of Facilities Management Association of NZ (FMANZ) and the latest addition to our BIMSafe Advisory Group.

A New Way to Learn about BIM and Health and Safety

The BIMSafe NZ Web Portal

The BIMSafe NZ Team is excited to announce a new direction for the project that will help the construction industry to see and use the potential of BIM technology for improving health and safety outcomes.

Rather than producing a static document that would soon become outdated, the project team is developing an interactive web portal that will allow industry users to access information tailored to specific roles and needs.

Integrating Building Information Modelling and Health and Safety: Procurement

Construction industry procurement is probably the area which can have the greatest single influence on BIM uptake and therefore BIMSafe.

To be most effective, projects which want to get the full benefits from BIM need to begin with a BIM brief that provides an integrated view of BIM use throughout the project lifecycle, across all disciplines involved.

The tension point here is the upfront costs involved, and educating the client to clearly understand where the return on this investment will be realised.

This research report identifies applications of BIM that can assist in different stages of project procurement, and looks at how the procurement process can enable the full benefits of BIM to be utilised for health and safety outcomes. Read the report here.

BIMSafe NZ in Design Videos

We are delighted to present four new videos in our series. These look at reinforcing steel in-ground beams, and where these connect to the structural steel and wall panels.

Using BIM models allows for on-site prefabrication, eliminating in situ work and reducing high-risk tasks in confined spaces.

The clash detection capability also significantly reduces the amount of rework required. The BIM model also reduces the gap between as-planned and as-built work, so that downstream work is not affected by what has been done previously.

The BIMSafe team will introduce its new web portal for hosting the project use studies, and how it will improve the accessibility to the project for all stakeholders.

New BIMSafe NZ Advisory Group Member: Jo Duggan

Welcome to Jo Duggan, CEO of Facilities Management Association of NZ (FMANZ)

Jo’s interest in joining the BIMSafe Advisory Group stems from her appreciation for the importance of facilities management (FM) within the BIM framework.

Jo brings with her a background in architecture, which then led her through various roles in product supply within the NZ Building Industry.

Along the way, she worked for various industry organisations before eventually joining FMANZ.
