BIMSafe NZ Update July 2022

Welcome to the second newsletter of the BIMsafe NZ Project.

We are now six months into the project, and it is full steam ahead with all workstreams beginning to gain momentum.

The author’s group for the project’s Best Practice Guidelines have been finalised, and work completed on Chapter outlines.

The Case Study‘s main contractor is on the verge of being finalised, and we look forward to engaging with them for this vital part of the project.

The project is very keen to engage with individuals and organisations who share our vision and passion for utilising BIM for health and safety outcomes. Please contact us and we can add you to our database for updates and specific project information.

We also welcome three new members to the team, details are below.

Recent Project Presentation to ACC Injury Prevention Grant Recipents

At the request of our funding partner ACC, we recently did a presentation at a Hui for the current Injury Prevention Grant Recipients and provided some information on the BIMSafe Project. Watch our presentation here.

The Hui was an opportunity for the Grant Recipients to share their stories about their projects, the challenges they have faced and overcome, and the lessons learned along the way. The common goal of reducing accidents and injuries is universal and the diverse range of organisations provide insight and fresh perspectives to each project.

The ACC Injury Prevention Grant is a source of funding from ACC whereby each year they fund three or four projects with the aim of reducing accidents and injuries across all industries. The recipients are those organisations who have received funding for a specific project, like our BIMSafe NZ Project.

We warmly welcome Dr Anthony Ifeanyi Okakpu to the BIMSafe NZ team as our full-time Research Assistant.

Ifeanyi will be responsible for the research papers which will support our project guideline authors and provide the international best practice perspective to the project. He is committed to forging strong links and relationships between academics and the industry.

The main research areas Ifeanyi will focus on include the effectiveness of the adoption of Building Information Modelling for Complex buildings in New Zealand, Smart cities Innovations, Seismic Retrofitting, and his knowledge of health and safety in construction operations. Continue reading…

Meet our newest BIMSafe Advisory Group members

Welcome to Blair Collie from RCP and Pete Lockhart from Naylor Love Construction who have joined our BIMSafe Advisory Group team. We look forward to their input on the Project. Learn a little more about them below.

Blair Collie – RCP

Blair is a Senior Project Manager at RCP. One of his first projects in the role was managing the demolition of the Cadbury Factory to make way for the New Dunedin Hospital. He is now looking after the new Ngai Tahu Property / ACC Development in Dunedin (details on that below). Read more about Blair here.

Pete Lockhart – Naylor Love Construction

Pete is the National Construction Manager at Naylor Love Construction and has 40 years of working in the industry from the ground up. He has seen significant changes in the professionalism of the construction industry over the years and the need for more specialist roles….Read more here.

Organisational Profile: Ngai Tahu Property

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is the largest of the South Island iwi, made up of eighteen Papatipu Rūnanga from across Te Waipounamu.

The Te Rūnanga Group (TRG) is responsible for managing the needs of the iwi, with Ngāi Tahu Holdings (NTH), the operational arm of TRG, existing to create wealth and protect the pūtea for future generations. NTH is made up of five operational Business Units.

Ngāi Tahu Property is the direct property and development business of Ngāi Tahu Holdings, providing both stable and growth returns from our portfolios.

Question 1: Why is Ngāi Tahu Property keen to be involved in the BIMSafe NZ project?

Use of BIMSafe is a natural trajectory for Ngāi Tahu Property as we are guided by our whakataukī – Kia hoki atu tātau katoa ki te Kāika, this translates to ’everyone home safe and well’.

We work within a dynamic and changing industry and wider environment. Unrecognised changes are a consistent theme emerging from industry and internal reviews and unfortunately, the impact of these changes on job safety are not always obvious. Use of BIMSafe enables its users to realign in real-time and to deliver on safety values as well as providing peace of mind that safety is a well-functioning component in the delivery of projects, such as NTP’s Ōtepoti project. About the BIMSafe NZ Project

About the Project:
BIMSafe NZ is a three-year project aimed at reducing workplace injury and harm by utilising the collaboration and visualisation powers of BIM.

The project has been funded by an ACC injury Prevention Grant, co-funded by MBIE through the Building Innovation partnership at UC, and in-kind contributions from our advisory and steering groups.
