BIMSafe NZ Update October 2022

Welcome to the third newsletter of the BIMsafe NZ Project.

We are approaching one year in, and significant milestones achieved are;

Formed an advisory group representing 15 different professional organisations
Published an international Literature review
Contracted authors to write the guidelines
Initiated research papers into the different topics to be covered in the guidelines
Launched a nationwide survey to record and analyse the current awareness and usage in BIM models for Safety
Started a video resource to be utilised in conjunction with the Guidelines
Received substantial media coverage and engagement with the construction sector

The next initiative is the Build Smarter event at the Christchurch Art Gallery, on November 3rd, 11:30am. This will feature presentations of several innovations in the construction sector around the use of technology.

This promises to be a very informative and insightful event, and anyone with a role in the construction industry looking for new ways to work would benefit from attending.

We are conducting important research to better understand how (BIM) technology is currently used in construction health and safety practices.

Even if you aren’t using BIM yet, your response will be really valuable as this feedback will help us to understand where our efforts should be directed to encourage greater industry engagement.

In order to set a benchmark and measure the industry’s progress over the next three years, we need accurate data from all stakeholders in both horizontal and vertical facilities projects in New Zealand to enable greater reach and impact across the industry.

Ngāi Tahu Developments ACC Ōtepoti Project

The BIMSafe NZ Case study Project is the new ACC Building in Dunedin, designed by Warren and Mahoney for Ngai-Tahu Property and the ACC Investment Fund

The design of the new Ngāi Tahu property building Ōtepoti was created within a collaborative co-design process undertaken by the Aukaha-Mana ahurea team-representing mana whenua and architects Warren and Mahoney. Read about the design in more depth here.

Organisational Profile: Advisian

Advisian is the consultancy arm of Worley, an international engineering firm supporting projects across the energy, chemical, resource and other sectors.

The Christchurch Advisian office deals primarily with safety and risk management, from cyber security to climate change mitigation. Today we talk with Kristin Hoskin, about Advisian and BIM.

How does Advisian utilize BIM models?

BIM is primarily used with our projects to assist with health and safety by design, assurance elements in work planning, user needs, sim-ops, and turnaround or decommissioning planning. Kristin Hoskin has been a member of the Canterbury Safety Charter’s Professional Services Working Group for several years and is now the BIMSafe Guidelines lead and editor.
